A good Maltese Mdina Art Glass Fish / Axe Head Vase signed Dobson C. 1978
A good Maltese Mdina Art Glass Fish / Axe Head Vase signed Dobson C. A very good hand blown Maltese Mdina Axe Head / Fish Vase browns and yellows. Very nice piece – Michael Harris design signed by the glass blower and dated 1978. Signature hard to read probably Eric Dobson but maybe Said but please view images. The Vase has good fire in it. Good Vintage Condition – a few light scratches as expected mentioned for accuracy and does not distract or affect the item. 8 inches (21cm) height X 8.5 inches (22cm) width approx. Signed: Mdina – 1978 – artist signature. The Mdina Glass factory was founded in Malta in 1968 by Michael Harris (1933 94), an ex- RCA tutor, who was inspired by the scenery on the island, and the colours used in the glass reflect the sun, sea and sand of the landscape. Due to the political situation, he left in 1972 and set up the Isle of Wight Glass factory. Since 1981 the Mdina factory has been run by Joseph Said, one of the original apprentices, and is still producing high-quality glass. The pieces from the early years are highly desirable, particularly those signed by Michael Harris himself. Large and Heavy Lalique Ingrid Vase 10.5 Inches Tall, 18 lbs MINT
Massive clear and frosted Ingrid Vase. Design #12289 by Marc Lalique. This is an exquisite vase perfectly executed and in mint condition. I could find no chips, fleabites, scratches, bruises, scuffs, repairs, or other signs of damage. Has protective scratch protecting pads on the bottom. Looks perfect to me. My fourth photo shows the vase sitting next to a lamp. Notice how this vase captures and redisplays light. It really comes alive when well lit. Marcs design is a sensual blend of frosted and smooth glass complimented by the delicately formed fluid lines. There are four very large frosted leaves rising up from the base of the vase. The leaves are separated by clear crystal. They are also deeply indented into the thick crystal walls of the vase. The deep indentation of the leaves somewhat explains the extra thick walls of this vase (0.8). Hand-crafted in Laliques Alsace France workshops. As best I can tell, this was designed in the 1960s. It is now retired. Measurements: A little under 10.5 inches in height, Top Diameter about 8.25 inches, base width at widest point about 5.625 The vase walls are extremely thick measuring about 0.8 inches. The form is cylindrical and tapering. Weight approximately 18 pounds. This is an exquisite and beautiful lead crystal vase. René Lalique founded the company and managed it until WWII. He died in 1945 and was succeeded by his son Marc. Marcs first big decision was to switch the formula from 12% lead demi crystal to 24% lead crystal. This made the products much brighter, sparkling, more transparent, and much heavier. This vase takes great advantage of this cyrstal and displays beautifully. We do not have the original Lalique box. This is Lalique’s Osumi Bud Vase in finest French Crystal. The vase is oval in shape with a small opening up top surrounded by frosted leaves that point downward. Lalique’s legendary quality is immediately apparent. It has that classic Lalique look of satinized or frosted glass contrasting with sparkling and ultra transparent clear crystal. Dimensions: 7 inches in height, 6 inches wide, and 4 inches deep. It is heavy crystal weighing more than 2 pounds. Signed Lalique ® France on the side edge of the bottom surface as photographed. Condition is mint as when new. It doesn’t look like it has ever been used. I found no damage or defects upon close inspection. We don’t have the original Lalique Box but will pack carefully and fully insure. Since the early 20th century when Rene Lalique started to design perfume bottles for Francois Coty in Paris, collectors all over the world have been searching for the most beautiful Lalique crystal pieces. These Lalique crystal pieces of art are hand made by Lalique crystals master glass workers. Lalique crystal has always been handcrafted in the Workshops that Rene Lalique built in 1921. They are located in the village of Wingen-sur-Moder in Alsace, a region of France which has the strongest glassmaking traditions. It has remained to this day the worlds sole Lalique production facility. Rene Lalique became famous for his designs of both jewelry and art glass. The company curtailed most operations during the German occupation of WWII. Rene passed right at the end of the war in 1945. His son Marc then took over the business and made some important changes. He changed the basic formula from 12% lead oxide demi crystal to 24% full lead crystal. This made pieces produced after 1945 much brighter, sparkling, more transparent, and much heavier because of all that lead content. Marc was later succeeded by Renes grand daughter Marie. Thanks to a team of passionate designers, Lalique creates each year beautiful pieces inspired by three themes dear to Rene Lalique: women, flora and fauna. In the creation studio, designers use traditional techniques such as drawing and modelling but also new technologies thanks to digitization and 3D printing. Once at the factory, the manufacturing process begins. A single crystal piece can require up to 40 different steps. With precise and regular movements, the human hand, that of both artist and craftsman, creates pieces of exceptional quality while preserving the ancestral know-how. Lalique is proud to count among its craftsmen four who carry the title of Best Craftsmen in France. The first few stages of the long process of production are related to the manufacturing of the molds which is a fundamental know-how of the factory. Then the glassmakers brave extreme temperatures in the hot glass workshops in order to gather, clean, shape and reheat the crystal. The melting crystal can reach 1,400°C and is captured and manipulated using a variety of techniques. In the cold glass workshops, a piece will undergo a succession of manual operations. These represent 2/3 of the time spent on the manufacturing of each object. The importance given to cold glass is characteristic of Lalique. It is the result of the extreme attention given to details, finishing and to the sculpture of each creation. The pieces are selected not only according to technical criteria (absence of defects) but also according to aesthetic criteria, with full respect of the creative teams intentions. During the entire process, each item is subject to rigorous checks before it can be signed by hand, a guarantee of its authenticity and quality.
