Located in the heart of Sweden’s Kingdom of Crystal [Swedish: Glasriket] sits the small glassblowing village of Strömbergshyttan. Here the art of glass blowing have been going on since 1876. The region is home to other well known glassworks such as Kosta Boda. Studioglas glassworks was founded by three master glassblowers who earlier worked for Hovmantorp, Orrefors, and Kosta Boda glassworks, namely Håkan Gunnarsson, Leif Persson och Mikael Axenbrant. During the latter years of the 1980’s famed glassblower Erik Höglund also worked at Studioglas. The Kingdom of Crystal (Swedish: Glasriket, The glass realm) is a geographical area today containing a total of 14 glassworks in the municipalities of Emmaboda, Nybro, Uppvidinge, and Lessebo in southern Sweden. The two municipalities Emmaboda and Nybro belong to Kalmar County and Lessebo and Uppvidinge belong to Kronoberg County. The area is part of the province Småland, and Nybro is considered the capital of the Kingdom of Crystal area. The Kingdom of Crystal is known for its handblown glass with a continuous story since 1742. The glassworks have become part of the culture of Sweden; examples can be found in many Swedish homes, recognizable by a small sticker at the bottom with the name Orrefors, Kosta Boda, Studioglas etc. The height of glass production was the end of the 19th century during which 77 glass factories were established with more than half of them situated in Småland. When touring the forested province of Småland in Sweden, it is normal to visit at least one of the glassworks. The larger ones have adjacent museums and are open for visitors to see the glass blowing hall, normally looking down from a platform. Food is available as well as shopping for various glass products such as glasses, bowls, vases and unique glass ornaments. The more notable are Orrefors Glasbruk, with the adjacent National School of Glass and Kosta Glasbruk, which is the basis for the Kosta Boda company. Each one of the glassworks have distinctive design traditions, character and atmosphere. However, a used item is a just that – a used item. Whether it be artwork, china toys, or clothing – there will always be imperfections. For instance, if a porcelain tea pot have crazing on the bottom – we’d point it out and photograph it. If it has faded colors – we’ll let you know. But if a hand blown vase has bubbles – it might not be noted or seen in the photos. Obvious, yes, but still, we’d like to have it said so that we are on the same page in terms of expectations. We’re happy to answer any questions you might have about the above item(s). For more info, photos, etc. We aim to respond within 24 hours. For taking the time to visit us today – we look forward to service you whenever possible.
