Ward Bennett Tiffany & Co Bowl, Vide-Poche, Optical Uranium Glass, Signed. There are two etchings on this historical item. The center is machine etched with “C of F 1968″. Please note that we do not know what C of F stands for at this time. The second etching is hand done by Ward Bennett and reads along the edge: Tiffany and Company Ward Bennett Design and this is written in a cursive handwriting style. This is a classic and rare item. Only 2 are known to exist that say Tiffany and Company and only one is known that has C of F etching making this a one of a kind piece from a historically significant chair and interior designer. Ward Bennett did work with Tiffany and Company in the 1960s. We recently made the discovery that this is in fact uranium infused glass and does glow a very bright green under a black light. Because of the shape of the glass this natural effect causes a beam to go through the item and around its edges. Good overall condition with some surface scratching and one tiny flea bite chip on bottom left rear edge. We set the price under the last known sale price. Please feel free to make an offer. Ward Bennett’s story is a remarkable one. His career began at age 13, when he quit school to work in the garment district in New York City. At 15, he designed his first clothing collection; at 16 he left for Europe, where he continued working on fashions. While in Europe, he attended art schools in Florence and Paris, but he was mostly self-taught, with skills that ranged from illustrating, sculpting, and jewelry-making to furniture, interior, and home design. “I learn from people, ” he once said, referencing a long line of influences, including Hattie Carnegie, Hans Hoffman, and Georgia O’Keeffe. Bennett eventually settled back in New York, where his reputation earned him some of the day’s most affluent clients: David Rockefeller and Chase Manhattan Bank, Tiffany & Co. Sasaki, Italian industrialist Gianni Agnelli, Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner. Another-former President Lyndon Baines Johnson-asked Bennett to design a chair for his presidential library that would be a cross between a barroom chair and a courtroom chair with a little Western saddle. Simplicity and comfort were always his goals, and Bennett says he learned a great deal about lumbar support, the importance of chair arms, and designing the right “pitch” from working with the doctor who treated John F. Indeed, Bennett designed more than 150 chairs, many of which have become classics, such as the Landmark chair, reintroduced by Geiger in 1993. Bennett began working with Geiger in 1987, following his collaboration with Brickel Associates. I learn from people. Bennett, who died in 2003, is also considered the first American to use industrial materials for home furnishings, well before the high-tech look of the 1970s became popular. He was hailed by the American Institute of Architects for transforming industrial hardware into sublime objects. “There was nothing superfluous about Ward’s designs, nothing’extra,'”says Tim deFiebre, Bennett’s former assistant and keeper of his legacy. They were always honed down to their bare essence, and that is what his work is about. Many of Bennett’s designs are in the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection as well as in the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum; he is also in Interior Design magazine’s Hall of Fame. “I think it’s a real testament to Ward’s work that a product 40 years old-the H frame storage-won Best of NeoCon Gold in 2004, ” says deFiebre. When I give talks about design, I always say, products may go in and out of favor, depending on the foibles of fashion, but good design is always good.

Rare SIGNED BOREK SIPEK AJETO URANIUM WRYTHEN BUBBLES CZECH ART GLASS VASE TAZZA
This listing is for a really rare and beautiful Signed GEMELLI AJETO CZECH REPUBLIC ART GLASS VASE TAZZA – CRAFTED BY BOREK SIPEK in 1998. The 11 1/2 amazing art glass vase is hand blown mostly using Uranium apart from the middle saucer which is plain bullicante glass. The colour of the glass is very bright green under UV LIGHT and a lovely bright yellow green in daylight. Either way it commands great attention for its form and colour. A real show stopper and centrepiece! It can be used as a vase or a tazza as it is dual purpose and can be either way up. The vase is wrythen which sends light and brightness in all direction and has the look of quilting as the back of the vase can be seen through the twisted wrythen on the front. This is set above a saucer of bullicante (bubbles) in clear glass which is then set on a hollow semi sphere which forms the tazza dish if turned the other way up. The condition is perfect with no nibbles, chips, cracks, fleabites or any other damage. It is signed by BOREK SIPEK and I have included a photo of his signature as well as the signature on the art glass vase. There is also a sticky label for Czech glass Craft Made in Czech Republic. Measurements: Height 11 1/2. Diameter across top 4 3/8. Middle clear bubble saucer – 7 diameter x 1 deep approx. Base – hollow 6 1/2 x 2 deep approx. Please message me if you have a query. I include a photo of a list of some of his life accomplishments as found on google…. Here is his life story I found on Google…. Boek ípek is a world-wide known architect, designer, visionary, cosmopolitan, self-made man, and we could use many other characteristics at this place. However, according to his colleagues and friends, Boek ípek is especially a good man with a great personality. The life of Boek ípek is a typical story about big world self-made men. He is often compared to a male Cinderella. At the age of fifteen, he became an orphan (both mother and father died of cancer). At nineteen, having nothing, he emigrated to Germany. Before emigrating he had graduated from an applied arts secondary school in Prague in the field of furniture construction. And he really made use of his studies. Before entering the university in Germany, he worked as a cabinetmaker. Thanks to the scholarship, he graduated from architecture in Hamburg and philosophy in Stuttgart. He taught design at universities in Hannover, Essen and then in Prague for many years. From 2005 he is the Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at the Technical University in Liberec, Czech Republic. Ípek’s first significant success was a glass house that he had built for his sister, for which he was awarded the German Architecture Prize in 1984. The world opened up for him and he moved to Amsterdam because he was attracted to the liberal atmosphere of this cosmopolitan city. In the middle of eighties he was contacted by the most prestigious Italian design company Driade. Cooperation with Driade was the beginning of the skyrocketing career of “the most distinguished contemporary designer” who “evokes the longing for magic in this horrid realistic world”. Driade published his new catalogue where ípek’s work was on offer, which proved his importance to the company. At that time, only four people had their own catalogue French Philippe Starck, Spanish Oscar Tusquets, Italian Antonia Astori, and Czech Boek ípek. Also thanks to the name Driade, people became more interested in his work and orders from other known and unknown firms soon came in. The Netherlands was struck by the Sipek-mania a Sipek started to aim at exclusive products produced in small quantities; he especially like to design chairs or other pieces of furniture, cutlery, glass, china, vases or lamps and other home accessories. And thanks to Driade, ípek was also able to explore Asia and his own passion for Asian culture and eastern thinking in general. However, Boek ípek has always felt like an architect more than a designer. It remained so until today. He has a simple explanation for it: design consists of packing things into a form and he does not pack. Architecture is a space creation for him and design was earlier a natural part of architecture. Architects, according to Boek ípek, forget how powerful they are. Architecture has the power to manipulate people positively. Architecture has such a power, much more than any other art. Architects can play with people, guiding them through the house as they need. Different rooms and places have different characters and people have different feelings in them. When we enter a theatre, we should have a different feeling than when we enter a bedroom or an office. As regards contemporary architecture, ípek says: When architecture is based on tradition, when it comes from it, even a simple man understands it. I try to interpret new contexts in a new way. It is much closer to me to newly explain something that has roots than to experiment. Tradition has always been a greater inspiration for me than experimentation. During the Renaissance, it was said that in front of a church, there must be at least four steps. You can learn a lot from this because going upstairs means nobleness. The architect and the solution he chooses make the difference. When I draw stairs in front of the building, it means that people will enter the building with a different feeling than when they enter it directly. I can let them enter quickly or slowly. The main reason of his success in the field of architecture and design is hidden in the following sentence: If you cannot start again and again, you end up in a routine. I like being unrestricted. The only restrictions that I welcome and that stimulate me are within the borders of the given order. I come out of it and I submit to it. My first two emigrations taught met his.
