If you’re unfamiliar with the work of Michael Schunke of West Grove, PA, you can read a short bio of him here. A video of him creating a massive abstract bowl at the Corning Museum of Glass last summer is here. Michael is one of the great contemporary American glass blowers working today. With a deep education in glass including a semester as teacher’s assistant to the maestro Lino Tagliapietra while at R. Michael is a master of Venetian techniques, and considered the finest Venetian goblet maker in America. He puts incredible focus on color selection and combinations, as well as developing clean, elegant and contemporary forms and new techniques built on 20+ years of experimentation. Rising 19 inches in an asymmetrical, leaning, elongated tear-drop form, the vase’s belly spans 7.5 inches across, but turned sideways, is only 3.5 inches deep. A rich transparent green dominates. But this is also cane work and the green contains embedded thin stripes of dark blue glass, repeating in an evenly spaced parallel pattern, which then twists diagonally through the piece. Being a transparent color vase, looking through it gives the effect that the dark blue stripes form a diagonal net. Finally, a void unexpectedly pierces through the belly of the piece, a half-inch diameter hole, adding interest and great optic distortions as the surface of the glass flows into the hole. This piece subtly shouts Michael’s mastery. No chips or scratches. Signed “Nine Iron Studios, Inc” – the name of Michael’s first glass company. He also signs as Michael Schunke, and creates pieces under the company name Vetro Vero formed with Josie Gluck. In my current downsizing, several larger pieces of glass collected over 30 years have to go. Michael is my favorite American glassblower, and I was fortunate to start collecting his work directly from him 20 years ago; his international reputation as an impeccable craftsman, designer and glassblower has only grown over the years. Domestic US Lower-48 States only, no international. This item is in the category “Pottery & Glass\Decorative Pottery & Glassware\Vases”. The seller is “christob35″ and is located in this country: US. Beautiful and Very rare Imperial glass bowl from the company’s Art Glass line, this cylinder vase is an example of stretch glass, sometimes mistaken for Carnival glass due to its iridescent finish. Unlike carnival glass, which is noted for its many heavy and ornate patterns, stretch glass have an iridescent matte finish with very simple design work if any at all. Another indication of stretch glass are the obvious stretch marks that are visible in the glass and can be seen in this piece as well and is the origin of its moniker. This vase is marked with the Imperial Iron Cross mark, only a few pieces were produced with this mark. The application for this mark was filed on May 19, 1920 and approved August 16,1921 however Imperial was using this to mark pieces before the approval date and discontinued its use in the late 1920s. This bowl has a manufacturing flaw that resulted in a small exposed bubble. Something that is common for glass this old There is in excellent condition, there are no chips, missing pieces, cracks, scratches, or stains.
