Rene Lalique 1941 Deauville Vase, Green Patina with Sculpted Vine. 6 Tall
“Deauville” is the very last vase designed and created by René Lalique personally in December 1941 , and it has a story worth telling: Lalique, at the end of that year, was 81 years old and already very sick. He had not designed a vase in over 2 years. He was visited by his friend Robert Fossorier, a wealthy industrialist and mayor of Deauville, the famous resort in Normandy. Deauville at the time had become a nazi garrison town, occupied by the German army with no civilian allowed within a quarter mile from the coast, hardly its former image as the most exclusive French beach. Fossorier commissioned Lalique to create a “Deauville” vase which he would send to the town’s most prized former vacationers and clientèle, just a message that the city would survive and rise again. Lalique liked the idea and set to work on his last vase. The message was well received: Deauville “reopened” in 1947, attended again by many who had received the vase. Fossorier, after WW2, was re-elected mayor until his death in 1962. It is a small vase, just over 6 tall, resting on a foot and sculpted all around with a motif of blooming vine which alternates clear and frosted glass. “Deauville” is repertoried and photographed in the large Marcilhac book, the unofficial “Lalique Bible”, on page 471 of the 2010 French printing under reference” 10-935″ (photo 7). The signature (photo 6) is “LALIQUE FRANCE”, not R LALIQUE… The condition is very good and the vase presents excellently. There is no break or chip. The base appears to be slightly out-centered (photo 5), which may be from origin, possibly too from an earlier repair. In that case, it has been extremely well done. The large Marcilhac book lists 3 vases ulterior to “Deauville”, but they were designed by Marc Lalique (René’s son) and others at the Lalique glassworks. These 3 vases (“Camargue”, “Cancale” and “Saint Emilion”) all have one thing in common, they absolutely do not resemble other vases by René Lalique. René LALIQUE was born on 6th April 1860 and from a very early age, he showed a desired towards art and a profound love of nature. As an apprentice learning the techniques of jewelery manufacturing, he continued to study art at the Ecole des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. In 1909, he opened a glassworks in Combs-La-Ville, to the east of Paris. LALIQUE held his first exhibition in the Place Vendôme concentrating purely on glass. Soon after this, he abandoned jewelery design to focus entirely on glass and glass manufacturing. Construction of the Wingen-sur-Moder factory employing skilled glass masters in the region of Alsace. Its installation was facilitated by President Alexandre Millerand who liked René Lalique’s works very much. LALIQUE’s glass was in such heavy demand that he opened in 1921 a second factory at Wingen-sur-Moder in Alsace, in the east of France. For René LALIQUE, 1925 was the summit of his career as a glass artist. The LALIQUE style was expressed mainly by the contrast between clear and frosted glass, sometimes with the addition of a patina, enamels, or colouring within the glass itself. During this period, he participated in large scale decorative and architectural projects for the Compagnie Internationale des Wagons-Lits, and others such as the ocean liner “Normandie ” and St Matthew’s church in St Helier, Jersey. He also took part in the great exhibitions held in Paris during this period – the Colonial in 1931, the Rétrospective in the Pavillon de Marsan at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in 1933, and the Paris World Fair in 1937. He left the Place Vendôme and opened in 1935 a new shop at 11, Rue Royale in Paris. The factory in Alsace was occupied by the German Army during the second world war. René LALIQUE died on 1st May 1945 in Paris without having seen the kilns of his factory re-lit and his works of art once again in production. Submit Best Offer, All Offers Will be Considered. Authentic Signed R Lalique Laurier Vase Opalescent Blue Excellent Condition. A stunning Opalescent Laurier’ vase by René Lalique. Model: 947 Circa 1922. The design features Bay Leaves and berries from the Bay Tree. This is a really beautiful example of Rene Lalique work. The entire vase is opalescent. René loved working with opalescent glass and this is a great example. You should know that the color varies depending on lighting conditions. In some lighting the blue is very apparent and in some other lighting you can barely see the color. That’s just the nature of Lalique’s opalescent glass. Lalique Vase Laurier: Cylindrical opalescent glass decorated all-over with leaves and berries from the bay-tree Measures about 7 inches tall and about 4.5 inches in diameter. The R Lalique signature is molded into the side edge near the bottom and is difficult to see with the naked eye. However, my camera was able to photograph it with some difficulty (see my last photo).
